Salary progression beyond this scale is subject to performance Job Family & Level: Research & Teaching, Extended level 5 Contract Status: Permanent post (available from 1 February 2013) Hours of work: Full-time Location: Department of Archaeology, University Park Responsible to: Head of Department Job Description: The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate excellence in teaching and research in the archaeology of early prehistory (Palaeolithic to Neolithic periods). The Department is particularly interested to hear from those with expertise in one of the following areas: • human skeletal remains • reconstructing cultural landscapes (terrestrial or submerged) • ethno-archaeology The person appointed will be responsible for teaching undergraduate and postgraduate modules, for supervising postgraduate research, for conducting and publishing research of international distinction and for contributing to departmental administration. Main Duties and Responsibilities: • Prepare, develop, and deliver, via lectures and seminars, modules for undergraduate students (normally 30-40 credits per annum), spread over a range of levels from introductory to final year, and in addition contribute to the teaching of the Department’s Masters programmes. • Mark coursework and exams, and provide appropriate feedback to students in accordance with Departmental and University policy. • Undertake a share of the supervision of undergraduate students for modules involving dissertations and independent study, the supervision of MA dissertations, and the supervision of postgraduate research students. • Produce research in the form of publications of a recognised national and international standard. • Provide pastoral care and academic guidance to personal tutees allocated by the Department. • Contribute to the administrative work of the Department as requested by the Head of Department. • Any other duties appropriate to the role and level. Person Specification: Essential Desirable Qualifications/ Education • PhD (or close to completion) in Archaeology or an allied discipline • Expertise in early prehistory (Palaeolithic to Neolithic periods) Expertise in one of the following areas: • human skeletal remains • reconstructing cultural landscapes (terrestrial or submerged) • ethno-archaeology Knowledge/ Skills/Training • Ability to make a strong individual research contribution to the Dept’s submission for the next REF exercise • Office procedures and IT skills including Microsoft Word and email • Additional teaching and research skills to augment those already covered in the Department • 30 credits of a UK Postgraduate Teaching Certificate or Education-related Masters, or equivalent • Higher Education Academy Fellow status or equivalent nationally recognised status for HE teaching from another country.
